Energy Price Shocks and the Macroeconomy: The Role of Consumer Durables
نویسندگان
چکیده
So far the literature on DSGE models with energy price shocks uses energy on the production side only. In these models, energy shocks are responsible for only a negligible share of output fluctuations. We study the robustness of this finding. The aim of our paper is to model the response of household behavior to energy shocks in more detail as in the existing literature. Specifically, in addition to energy on the production side, we explicitly model private consumption of energy, durable goods and non-durable goods in a DSGE model. We calibrate the model to match energy and durable goods consumption observed in U.S. data and simulate the economy to compare business cycle statistics to those coming from an economy without durable goods. We find that modeling private energy consumption as a complement to durable goods consumption actually lowers the share of output fluctuations coming from energy shocks. TFP shocks continue to be the driving force behind business cycles. JEL codes: E32, Q43

The Impact of Shocks in Oil price and Exchange Rate on Inflation in Iran: The Application of the VAR Approach
Iran is one of the oil exporting countries, so the oil price plays a remarkable role in the government budget and is a major source of foreign exchange. On the other hand, the reliance of the government budget to oil income as well as its fluctuations is a fact referred to as the most important cause of inflation by many researchers. This paper explores the effect of shocks in the exchange rate...

This paper investigates the interactive relationships among China energy price shocks, stock market, and the macroeconomy using multivariate vector autoregression. The results indicate that there is a long cointegration among them. A 1% rise in the energy price index can depress the stock market index by 0.54% and the industrial value-adding growth by 0.037%. Energy price shocks also cause infl...
متن کاملDurable Goods and Sectoral Effects of Monetary Policy
High degree of interest sensitivity of durable goods is now a stylized fact in the literature of monetary policy. This literature, however, does not provide a clear and consensual explanation for the modalities of this stylized fact. In this paper, two independent empirical models are performed to shed more light on the cross-sectoral impacts of monetary policy. The results of first study indic...
متن کاملMacroeconomic Shocks and Malaysian Tourism Industry: Evidence from a Structural VAR Model
Abstract his study employs a structural vector autoregression (SVAR) model to investigate the macroeconomic shocks on Malaysian tourism industry, especially how the economy dynamically responds to oil price shocks, exchange rates, changes in price level, exports, economic growth and tourism income during the study time period from January 2001 to December 2012. The results indicate that oil...
متن کاملEconomic Analysis of Price Shocks of Production Inputs and Their Impact on Cotton Price in Iran: The Application of Panel Data Vector Auto-Regression (PVAR) Model
Cotton is a strategic crop with a critical role in the economy and agriculture. The increasing price of crop inputs is the main challenge for the developing countries, including Iran, so that it is crucial for the economy of the states to recognize the underpinning factors. Accordingly, the present study aimed to identify the relationship between price shocks of cotton production inputs and cot...
